Description
Cut through the male skull in lateral profile, the cranial vault opens to a partial sagittal section of the encephalon with the cerebral hemispheres occupying the superior and anterior cranial fossae and the cerebellum seated posteroinferiorly in the posterior fossa. The cerebral cortex is rendered with prominent gyri and sulci, with the frontal lobe anterior to the central sulcus and the parietal and occipital lobes extending posteriorly toward the internal occipital region. Inferior to the cerebrum, the brainstem descends from midbrain to pons and medulla toward the foramen magnum, while midline basal structures near the sella turcica region suggest the optic chiasm and pituitary (hypophysis). Bony landmarks such as the orbit and maxilla or mandible segment sit anteroinferiorly, providing orientation to the cranial base. A lateral cut-section like this earns its keep when you need to teach how intracranial compartments relate to skull anatomy: cortex to calvaria, cerebellum to posterior fossa, and brainstem to the foramen magnum and clivus. It is also the clearest way to connect symptoms to location, for example transtentorial (uncal) herniation compressing the midbrain, or posterior fossa mass effect threatening the fourth ventricle and obstructing CSF flow. Spatial anatomy matters. This view makes it easy to point at where it happens. Use it in neuroanatomy and head and neck blocks to introduce lobar organization, major sulci, and the basic layout of the cranial fossae in one frame. It also suits clinical teaching slides for neurosurgical approaches to the sellar region (transsphenoidal corridor) and radiology primers that map gross structures to CT and MRI appearance.
