Description
Shown in a superficial, subcutaneous male torso dissection-style view, the external oblique is identifiable by its inferomedial “hands-in-pockets” fiber direction as it arises from the external surfaces of ribs 5 through 12. Its muscular belly occupies the anterolateral abdominal wall, lying inferior to the serratus anterior digitations and lateral to the rectus abdominis region, then transitions anteriorly into a broad external oblique aponeurosis. Inferiorly, fibers converge toward the iliac crest and the aponeurosis contributes to the inguinal ligament along the line from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic tubercle. This is the layer surgeons meet early in an open inguinal hernia repair, where splitting the external oblique aponeurosis exposes the inguinal canal and the superficial inguinal ring, so accurate depiction of the aponeurotic fibers and their inferior thickening matters. It also clarifies how the external oblique interdigitates with serratus anterior on the lateral thoracic wall, a common source of confusion when teaching the transition from chest wall to abdominal wall musculature. A clean fiber map helps when correlating with flank incisions and abdominal wall strain patterns in athletes.
