Description
Shown from a left lateral, slightly anterolateral perspective, the male torso is rendered with translucent integument to expose the superficial musculature of the thoracoabdominal wall. The external oblique occupies the lateral abdomen, its inferomedially directed fibers running from the external surfaces of the lower ribs toward the linea alba and the iliac crest, where its broad aponeurosis begins anteriorly. Superior to it, slips of serratus anterior interdigitate with the external oblique along the lateral rib cage, while pectoralis major forms the anterior chest mass with its inferolateral border approaching the anterior axillary fold. For teaching surface anatomy, this is the view that clarifies how the external oblique transitions from muscular belly laterally to aponeurosis anteriorly, the same sheet that contributes to the anterior rectus sheath and the superficial inguinal ring.
