Description
Prominent mucosal villi project from the luminal surface of the small intestine, each covered by simple columnar epithelium with a brush border of microvilli and scattered goblet cells. Beneath the epithelium, the lamina propria fills the villus core and extends between adjacent villi, carrying capillary loops and a central lacteal arranged just deep to the epithelial basement membrane. Inferior to the mucosa, the muscularis mucosae forms a thin smooth muscle boundary, followed by the submucosa and then the muscularis externa with an inner circular layer deep to an outer longitudinal layer, all oriented concentrically around the lumen. Histology at this scale is where functional differences across duodenum, jejunum, and ileum become teachable. Short. Taller, more leaflike villi with prominent plicae circulares favor the jejunum, while the ileum shifts toward shorter villi and heavier lymphoid surveillance, including Peyer patches that expand the lamina propria and may reach the submucosa. Recognizing the epithelial-lamina propria interface also matters clinically: celiac disease flattens villi and increases intraepithelial lymphocytes, and lymphatic obstruction can dilate lacteals, blunting fat absorption even when the muscularis externa remains intact.
