Mucosal villi project superiorly into the intestinal lumen as closely packed, finger-like processes, each lined by simple columnar epithelium with interspersed goblet cells. Within each villus, a central lacteal (lymphatic channel) runs in parallel with a capillary network, both coursing from the lamina propria toward the villus tip before draining inferiorly toward the submucosa. Between adjacent villi, the epithelium dips into intestinal crypts (crypts of Lieberkuhn), while deeper layers of the wall step outward from mucosa to submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. That mucosa-first emphasis matters when you are teaching absorption and barrier function, because most clinically relevant injury begins at the villus-crypt axis before it becomes a full-thickness bowel problem.
