Description
Prominent mucosal villi project from the luminal surface of the small intestine, their bases separated by the tubular intestinal glands (crypts of Lieberkühn) that descend inferiorly into the lamina propria. Each villus contains a central lacteal positioned medially within the core and a surrounding capillary network coursing toward the epithelial surface, while a thin sheet of simple columnar epithelium with an apical brush border (microvilli) forms the interface with luminal contents. Deep to the mucosa, the submucosa sits inferior to the muscularis mucosae and transitions into the muscularis externa, with an inner circular layer internal to an outer longitudinal layer to drive peristalsis. Regional context aligns with duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, where villus height, plicae circulares, and lymphoid tissue burden vary along the proximal to distal axis. Functional anatomy comes into focus when you track how nutrients move from lumen to vessel, monosaccharides and amino acids pass into villus capillaries, while chylomicrons enter the lacteal for lymphatic transport. A short distance separates absorption from injury. Blunting of villi and crypt hyperplasia in celiac disease sharply reduces absorptive surface area, and the arrangement of submucosal and myenteric plexuses helps explain motility disorders and postoperative ileus after bowel handling.
