Description

Centered on the anterior mandible, the mental artery emerges from the mental foramen and fans out within the soft tissues of the chin and lower lip, coursing superficial to the mandibular body and deep to the skin and orbicularis oris. Branching arterioles interlace with accompanying venous channels and track alongside the mental nerve as it divides into labial and mental cutaneous branches. Superiorly, the vascular network approaches the inferior labial region, while laterally it extends toward the commissure in the territory shared with the facial artery. Clinical relevance sits at the mental foramen. Dental implant placement, genioplasty, and open reduction of mandibular fractures risk lacerating the mental artery or its perforators, producing brisk bleeding and postoperative hematoma in the chin.
