Description
From an anterior craniofacial perspective, the maxillary artery is traced as a terminal branch of the external carotid artery coursing deep to the ramus of the mandible, then running in close relationship to the lateral pterygoid within the infratemporal fossa. As it progresses anteriorly toward the pterygopalatine fossa, the vessel’s path can be read against bony landmarks including the zygomatic arch laterally, the maxilla and alveolar process inferiorly, and the orbital margins superiorly. Superficial facial vasculature, such as the facial artery and the superficial temporal artery, provides a spatial contrast to the deeper maxillary segment. Red arterial channels and blue venous pathways interweave across the skull, with the teeth, nasal aperture, and orbits giving reliable orientation. Anterior visualization of the maxillary artery matters because this vessel underpins several high-stakes clinical problems: severe posterior epistaxis (often managed by endoscopic ligation of the sphenopalatine artery), hemorrhage during Le Fort fractures, and bleeding control in maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. Its proximity to the lateral pterygoid and mandibular neck also explains why pterygoid region trauma and procedures around the infratemporal fossa can turn into difficult-to-control arterial bleeding. A deep vessel, but not a forgiving one. In teaching, this artwork fits head and neck anatomy courses, dental and oral surgery curricula, and surgical atlas content on infratemporal and pterygopalatine fossae, with clear relevance for ENT discussions of epistaxis pathways and embolization targets.
