Description
Anterior orbital anatomy frames the lacrimal artery as it courses along the lateral wall of the orbit from the ophthalmic artery, then issues muscular branches that run laterally and slightly inferiorly toward the lateral rectus muscle. Red arterioles trace across the periorbital connective tissues, while accompanying blue veins parallel the arterial paths along the superolateral orbit. Osseous landmarks of the skull and orbit form the deep background, with the orbital rim and a partial view of the adjacent nasal cavity providing medial orientation. Tracing these muscular branches matters because the lacrimal artery sits in the surgical corridor used for lateral orbitotomy, lacrimal gland procedures, and repair of orbital trauma, where bleeding can obscure the field and compromise visualization of the lateral rectus and its neurovascular supply. Small-caliber vessels become large problems in a tight space. This anterior perspective also supports teaching of the ophthalmic artery’s branch pattern and helps differentiate arterial routes from venous drainage when reviewing periorbital ecchymosis, iatrogenic hematoma, or vascular injury during endoscopic and open approaches near the orbital apex.
