Description
Seen from the posterior body surface beneath a semi-transparent integument, the intrinsic (dorsal) back musculature is organized in paired longitudinal columns flanking the spinous processes from the cervical region to the sacrum. The erector spinae mass is legible as iliocostalis laterally, longissimus intermediate, and spinalis medially, with the thoracolumbar fascia spanning the lower thoracic and lumbar regions and blending inferiorly toward the posterior iliac crest. Superiorly, the superficial contour over the scapular region implies underlying trapezius and latissimus dorsi, while the vertebral column provides the midline reference through the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar curvatures. Bilateral symmetry is a key read. Posterior back muscle anatomy matters when you need to localize pain generators and plan safe access to the spine.
