Description
Cut through the male kidney reveals a peripheral renal cortex encasing the deeper renal medulla, where multiple renal pyramids form conical wedges whose papillae (apices) project medially toward the renal sinus. Between adjacent pyramids, renal columns extend from cortex toward the pelvis, separating the medullary units. Minor calyces cup each papilla, converging into major calyces and then the renal pelvis, which narrows inferiorly into the ureter at the hilum. Striations within the pyramids correspond to aligned collecting ducts and loops of Henle running from corticomedullary junction toward the papillary tip. That papillary-to-calyceal relationship is the key teaching point for urinary outflow and for localizing obstruction. A small calculus lodged at a calyx or the ureteropelvic junction can produce upstream dilation (hydronephrosis) that first blunts the calyces and then compresses medullary pyramids, a pattern routinely correlated with ultrasound and CT urography. Papillary necrosis, classically associated with diabetes mellitus, analgesic nephropathy, or sickle cell disease, targets the papillae and can be explained cleanly when the pyramids, papillary tips, and calyces are shown in one section. Use this artwork in renal anatomy and physiology teaching to link nephron segments in cortex and medulla with the collecting system, and in pathology or radiology materials illustrating hydronephrosis, papillary necrosis, and calyceal anatomy.
