Description
Beneath the anterior cervical skin of an adult male, the sternothyroid muscle is presented as a paired infrahyoid strap running superiorly from the posterior surface of the manubrium sterni and the first costal cartilage toward the oblique line of the thyroid cartilage. Its medial border lies close to the midline over the laryngeal framework, while the sternocleidomastoid sits more laterally, spanning from the mastoid process to the manubrium and medial clavicle. Superiorly, the mandible and adjacent craniofacial skeleton frame the upper neck, and posteriorly the cervical vertebrae provide axial reference behind the visceral compartment. Bony landmarks at the sternoclavicular joint and upper thoracic cage orient the muscle’s inferior attachments. Sternothyroid matters because it is the principal depressor of the thyroid cartilage after swallowing, coordinating with sternohyoid and omohyoid during the pharyngeal phase to return the larynx to a resting position. This relationship becomes clinically concrete in anterior neck surgery: strap muscle separation and retraction during thyroidectomy or tracheostomy exposes the larynx and trachea, and the sternothyroid often requires division or lateralization to improve access to the superior pole or to control bleeding in the pretracheal region.
