Description

Dominating the upper abdomen, the abdominal aorta descends slightly left of the vertebral bodies before giving rise to the superior mesenteric artery, which emerges anteriorly and courses inferiorly into the root of the mesentery. From that proximal trunk, jejunal and ileal branches radiate in an arc to the left and right, forming multiple arterial arcades with straight vasa recta extending toward the small bowel. The relationship to the axial skeleton is clear, with the vessel origin positioned anterior to the lumbar spine and inferior to the costal margin, while the inferior vena cava runs parallel and slightly to the patient’s right.
