Presented in anterior orientation, the inferior mesenteric artery arises from the abdominal aorta inferior to the renal arteries and courses inferiorly toward the left lower quadrant, where it gives off the left colic artery, multiple sigmoid arteries, and continues as the superior rectal artery into the pelvis. Along the descending colon and sigmoid colon, arterial branches run within the mesocolon, approaching the bowel from a medial-to-lateral direction before forming marginal arcades near the mesenteric border. The ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid colon are rendered with haustra and epiploic appendages, placing the vascular tree in immediate topographic context. For teaching hindgut perfusion, this view does the job. You can track how the left colic artery ascends toward the splenic flexure and how the sigmoid branches descend and fan out, an arrangement that matters during left hemicolectomy and sigmoid colectomy when the surgeon balances oncologic lymphadenectomy at the IMA pedicle against preservation of perfusion to the distal colon.
