Description
Beneath the skin of the male anterolateral trunk, the external oblique muscle dominates the superficial abdominal wall, its fibers coursing inferomedially from the lower ribs toward the linea alba and iliac crest. Deep to that plane, the transversus abdominis lies as the deepest of the flat abdominal muscles, running transversely from costal cartilages 7 to 12 and the thoracolumbar fascia toward the rectus sheath, with posterior continuity to the lumbar spine. Superiorly, the rib cage frames the field, while posterior vertebral elements and a proximal humerus establish thoracic and shoulder girdle context along the lateral margin. Clinically, distinguishing external oblique from transversus abdominis matters because their aponeuroses form the layered architecture of the rectus sheath and contribute to the posterior wall of the inguinal canal, the anatomy surgeons rely on during open and laparoscopic hernia repair. The transversus abdominis and internal oblique also generate the conjoint tendon medially, and weakness or disruption in these deep layers correlates with direct inguinal herniation and postoperative bulge after flank or iliac crest approaches.
