Seen in lateral profile beneath the skin of an adult male torso, the transversus abdominis forms the deepest muscular layer of the anterolateral abdominal wall, its fibers coursing horizontally from the thoracolumbar fascia and inner surfaces of the lower costal cartilages toward the linea alba. Superficial to it, the external oblique and internal oblique layers are implied as overlying sheets, while posteriorly the muscle blends with the thoracolumbar fascia adjacent to the lumbar vertebrae. Superiorly, lower ribs and intercostal spaces frame the upper attachment region, and inferiorly the iliac crest provides a clear bony reference for the muscle’s caudal origin. Functionally, this is the layer you teach when the goal is abdominal wall mechanics rather than superficial “six pack” anatomy. Contraction increases intra-abdominal pressure and stabilizes the lumbopelvic segment, a point that matters in ventral hernia assessment and repair where the transversus abdominis and its aponeurosis define the deep plane for closure and reinforcement. Surgeons also track this anatomy in a transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block, placing local anesthetic between the internal oblique and transversus abdominis to target thoracolumbar nerves supplying the anterior abdominal wall.
