Description
Layered on the left anterolateral abdominal wall, the transversus abdominis is presented deep to the external oblique, with its fibers running predominantly transverse around the flank from the costal margin toward the iliac crest. Superiorly, the lower ribs and costal cartilages frame the muscle’s upper attachments, while posteriorly the thoracolumbar fascia blends with its aponeurotic origin near the lumbar vertebrae. Inferiorly, the iliac crest and adjacent pelvis provide a clear bony reference for the abdominal muscle layers and their fascial continuity. Skin has been removed to expose the muscular plane. Teaching the transversus abdominis layer matters because it is the deepest of the flat abdominal muscles and a primary contributor to the abdominal wall’s hoop tension, working through the rectus sheath and linea alba to stabilize the lumbar spine and increase intra-abdominal pressure.
