Description
Bisecting the head and neck at the midline, this half anterior view pairs an intact right hemiface with a left-sided dissection that exposes superficial and intermediate facial and cervical musculature over the craniofacial skeleton. On the skeletal side, the frontal bone, nasal bones, zygomatic bone, maxilla, and mandible frame the orbital margins and the piriform aperture, while the temporalis occupies the temporal fossa and the masseter spans from the zygomatic arch to the lateral surface of the mandibular ramus. Medial to the buccinator, the oral aperture is encircled by orbicularis oris, and orbicularis oculi follows the bony orbit; inferiorly the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process toward the manubrium and clavicle, with trapezius forming a posterolateral cervical contour. Facial asymmetry is intentional. For teaching surface anatomy, the split presentation makes muscle-bone relationships easy to localize, from the mandibular angle as a landmark for the masseter to the infraorbital rim as a reference for periorbital dissection. Clinically, this is the orientation used to discuss facial trauma patterns (zygoma, orbital rim, nasal bridge) and to plan incisions that respect relaxed skin tension lines while anticipating what lies deep to the skin in approaches to the parotidomasseteric region. The sternocleidomastoid is shown as the dominant anterior neck strap, a practical guide when introducing the carotid triangle, internal jugular vein access, or levels of cervical lymph nodes in head and neck oncology. Use it in gross anatomy and head and neck courses to anchor lectures on the muscles of facial expression, mastication, and the layered anatomy of the anterior neck, and in surgical atlases illustrating exposure for mandibular angle fractures, orbital rim repair, or anterior cervical approaches.
