Description
Seen in lateral profile beneath semi-transparent skin, the depressor supercilii occupies the medial supraorbital region, arising near the frontal bone and blending with the superior orbital fibers of orbicularis oculi as it courses toward the medial eyebrow. Adjacent and slightly posterior, corrugator supercilii runs superolaterally from the medial superciliary arch toward the mid-brow, while the frontalis lies superiorly as a broad aponeurotic sheet that elevates the brow. Deep bony landmarks include the frontal bone and supraorbital margin anteriorly, the nasal bones at the glabella, and the zygomatic bone laterally; inferiorly, the maxilla and mandible frame the dentition, with the hyoid and upper cervical vertebrae trailing posterior to the mandibular angle. Functionally, the depressor supercilii pulls the medial brow inferiorly and slightly medially, opposing frontalis and amplifying the vertical glabellar lines that patients describe as a tired or angry look. This view helps clarify why chemodenervation of the glabellar complex often targets corrugator and procerus but must respect the depressor supercilii and the close relationship to orbicularis oculi to avoid excessive brow descent. Small muscle, visible consequences. The regional course of the temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve, and the proximity of the supraorbital neurovascular bundle at the supraorbital rim, also make this anatomy relevant during endoscopic brow lift, upper blepharoplasty planning, and periocular injection mapping.
