Description
Seen from a lateral perspective on the male hip, the gluteus medius forms a broad, fan-shaped muscle deep to the superficial fascia and skin, spanning from the external (gluteal) surface of the ilium to its insertion on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter of the femur. Its anterior fibers course anteroinferiorly toward the trochanter, while the posterior fibers run more vertically and posteriorly, creating a layered contour between the iliac crest superiorly and the proximal femur inferiorly. Along its deep surface, the muscle relates to the gluteus minimus, and its superficial border blends posteriorly toward the gluteal fascia that continues into the iliotibial tract. Clean landmarks. Abductor function is only part of the story. In single-leg stance, gluteus medius generates an abduction moment to counter pelvic drop, so weakness, tendinopathy at the greater trochanter, or superior gluteal nerve injury produces a Trendelenburg sign and the familiar compensatory trunk lean seen in lumbar radiculopathy mimics and post-THA patients. Surgeons and anatomists also value this lateral exposure because split or detachment of its fibers can occur in lateral and anterolateral approaches to total hip arthroplasty, and the “safe” zone for intramuscular injection tracks the superolateral quadrant to avoid the sciatic nerve while remaining posterior to the tensor fasciae latae. Use this plate for teaching hip abductor anatomy in gross anatomy labs, sports medicine modules on greater trochanteric pain syndrome, and operative atlases discussing superior gluteal nerve at-risk anatomy during lateral hip approaches.
