Viewed from the lateral aspect of the left cerebral hemisphere in an adult male, the lobulus parietalis inferior occupies the posteroinferior parietal cortex between the sulcus intraparietalis superiorly and the posterior ramus of the sulcus lateralis (Sylvian fissure) inferiorly. Its gyri are organized around the posterior end of the sulcus lateralis, with the gyrus supramarginalis arching over the termination of the fissure and the gyrus angularis curving posteriorly toward the parieto-occipital region. Anteriorly it lies posterior to the postcentral gyrus, while posteriorly it approaches the lateral occipital cortex. The blue-highlighted Sylvian fissure provides the dominant inferior boundary and an immediate orientation landmark. This lateral perspective matters because the inferior parietal lobule sits at the junction of somatosensory association cortex with temporal and occipital networks involved in language and visuospatial integration. Lesions in the dominant hemisphere commonly produce Gerstmann syndrome (agraphia, acalculia, finger agnosia, left-right disorientation), while right-sided involvement is classically associated with hemispatial neglect and constructional apraxia. For neurosurgical planning and neuroimaging correlation, the relationship of supramarginal and angular gyri to the posterior Sylvian fissure helps localize perisylvian cortex implicated in conduction aphasia and guides mapping during awake craniotomy.
