Description
Seen in lateral aspect, the cerebral hemisphere is rendered with the parietal lobe occupying the superolateral cortex posterior to the central sulcus and superior to the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure). The postcentral gyrus forms its anterior boundary, with the superior and inferior parietal lobules extending posteriorly toward the occipital pole, separated by the intraparietal sulcus on the outer surface. Inferiorly, the parietal cortex relates to the posterior temporal lobe along the lateral sulcus, while the cerebellum and brainstem sit posteroinferior to the cerebrum as deeper landmarks. Parietal lobe topography matters when you need to connect surface anatomy to somatosensory function and spatial attention. Lesions involving the postcentral gyrus produce contralateral sensory loss and cortical sensory deficits (agraphesthesia, astereognosis), while right inferior parietal injury classically presents with hemispatial neglect and constructional apraxia. This lateral view also supports preoperative planning for craniotomy around the central sulcus, where preserving the primary motor cortex anteriorly and primary somatosensory cortex posteriorly depends on accurate sulcal identification. Neurology and neuroanatomy teaching often needs a clean lateral hemisphere to orient students before introducing Brodmann areas, functional localization, or stroke syndromes in the middle cerebral artery territory. Publishers also use this angle to caption figures on somatosensory homunculus placement, parietal association cortex, and bedside localization after trauma or tumor resection.
