Description
Curving around the posterior end of the lateral sulcus (Sylvian fissure), the supramarginal gyrus (gyrus supramarginalis) is highlighted on the lateral surface of a single cerebral hemisphere in an adult male brain. It sits in the inferior parietal lobule, immediately posterior to the postcentral gyrus and superior to the posterior superior temporal gyrus, wrapping the termination of the lateral sulcus like a cap. Anteriorly it approaches the postcentral sulcus, while posteriorly it transitions toward the angular gyrus around the posterior end of the superior temporal sulcus. The cortical gyri and sulci of the convexity are rendered with enough relief to appreciate their depth and continuity. The brainstem remains visible inferiorly as an orientation landmark. Clinically, this lateral perspective helps you localize the supramarginal gyrus relative to perisylvian language cortex and the postcentral somatosensory strip, a neighborhood that matters in both stroke mapping and operative planning. Lesions in the dominant (usually left) supramarginal gyrus commonly produce conduction aphasia with impaired repetition due to disruption of the arcuate fasciculus network, and can contribute to apraxia of speech and phonological processing deficits. On the nondominant side, inferior parietal injury can contribute to hemispatial neglect and impaired sensorimotor integration. A practical landmark. Use this asset for neuroanatomy teaching on lobar and gyral surface anatomy, for neurology and neurosurgery texts discussing perisylvian syndromes, and for patient-facing explanations of where an MCA inferior-division infarct or a parietal opercular lesion sits on the cortical convexity.
