Description
Arising as the terminal branch of the inferior alveolar nerve, the mental nerve exits the mental foramen on the anterolateral surface of the mandible and immediately divides into superior and inferior labial branches that fan anteriorly across the soft tissues of the chin. From a lateral perspective, the nerve’s terminal filaments course superficial to the mandibular body toward the skin of the mentum and lower lip, with their distribution mapped against the adjacent facial skeleton. The mandibular canal and the relationship of the mental foramen to the premolar region are apparent, as are surrounding craniofacial landmarks of the cranium and facial bones. Clinically, this is the sensory territory clinicians check when evaluating injury to the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (CN V3). Numbness of the lower lip and chin frequently follows dental extractions, mandibular fracture lines near the premolars, or iatrogenic trauma during implant placement, where proximity to the mental foramen and the anterior loop of the inferior alveolar nerve determines safe drilling depth and angulation. Precise mental nerve localization also matters for mental nerve block anesthesia and for planning incisions and flap elevation during genioplasty and other chin approaches. Small nerve, big consequences. Educators can drop this into head and neck anatomy teaching to reinforce the pathway from CN V3 to the inferior alveolar nerve and out through the mental foramen, then connect that anatomy to dermatomes and sensory testing of the lower face.
