Description
Positioned on the lateral surface of the ilium, the gluteus minimus is shown as the deepest of the posterolateral hip abductors, lying deep to where the gluteus medius would normally overlie it and spanning toward the proximal femur. Its broad origin occupies the external (gluteal) surface of the ilium inferior to the anterior gluteal line, and its fibers converge anteroinferiorly to insert on the anterior facet of the greater trochanter. Superiorly, the iliac crest and adjacent lower lumbar spine frame the pelvis, while inferiorly the femoral neck and trochanteric region define the muscle’s distal relationship to the hip joint. Bone landmarks read cleanly. Lateral projection matters because it clarifies how gluteus minimus contributes to pelvic stability during single leg stance by generating an abduction moment and assisting internal rotation when the hip is extended. Trendelenburg gait is the clinical shorthand.
