Description
Seen in lateral profile, the temporalis fans over the temporal fossa superior to the zygomatic arch, while the masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible from the zygomatic arch to the mandibular angle. Anterolaterally, the sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely from the mastoid process and lateral superior nuchal line toward the manubrium and medial clavicle, forming a clear boundary between the anterior cervical region and the posterior triangle. Posterior and inferior to it, the upper fibers of trapezius slope from the external occipital protuberance and nuchal ligament toward the acromion, blending into the shoulder contour beneath a partially translucent skin layer. The auricle and external acoustic meatus anchor the surface anatomy between temporalis and sternocleidomastoid. Lateral head and neck muscle anatomy is where surface landmarks meet clinical practice.
