Description
Seen in lateral profile, the right and left lungs occupy the thoracic cavity above a domed diaphragm, their convex costal surfaces oriented laterally and their apices projecting superiorly toward the thoracic inlet. Superiorly, the trachea descends in the midline, its cartilaginous rings leading toward the carina and primary bronchi at the lung roots. The oblique fissure is evident on both sides, separating superior from inferior lobes, while the right lung also shows a more anterior horizontal fissure creating a distinct middle lobe. Pulmonary vessels course at the hila, with branching veins visible within the parenchyma. A lateral view is the clearest way to teach how the oblique fissure tracks anteroinferiorly and how the diaphragm’s resting dome relates to basal lung segments. That relationship matters in practice: pleural effusions layer dependently in the posterior costodiaphragmatic recess on upright imaging, and lower lobe atelectasis or aspiration pneumonia often involves the posterior basal segments that sit closest to the diaphragm in this projection. The tracheal axis and proximal airway caliber also provide a useful reference when discussing endotracheal tube depth and mainstem intubation, which more often enters the right main bronchus because of its wider, more vertical course. Pulmonology and gross anatomy instructors use this type of rendering to orient students before cross sectional CT or chest radiograph interpretation, and it drops cleanly into lecture slides on ventilation mechanics, diaphragmatic excursion, and lobar anatomy. It also fits clinical education materials on pleural space procedures (thoracentesis and chest tube placement) where understanding fissure location and diaphragmatic height helps avoid lung or abdominal organ injury.
