Description
Prominently rendered in anterior thoracic orientation, the larynx continues inferiorly as the trachea, its C shaped cartilaginous rings leading to the carina and the right and left main bronchi. Within the right lung, the bronchial tree arborizes through superior, middle, and inferior lobes separated by the horizontal and oblique fissures, while the left main bronchus divides into lobar and segmental bronchi supplying the superior and inferior lobes around the cardiac notch. Medial to the lungs sits the heart, slightly left of midline, with the great vessels and the pulmonary arteries and veins shown branching at the hila and fanning laterally into the parenchyma. Color coding distinguishes pulmonary arterial inflow from pulmonary venous return. Anterior views that include both bronchial and vascular trees are the workhorse for teaching ventilation perfusion matching, because you can track inspired air from trachea to distal bronchi alongside pulmonary arterial branches that follow the bronchi into each bronchopulmonary segment. That pairing matters in practice: hilar tumors, sarcoidosis, and enlarged lymph nodes compress bronchi and pulmonary vessels at the root of the lung, and the pattern of lobar involvement helps you localize obstruction or pneumonia to a specific bronchus (for example, aspiration favoring the more vertical right main bronchus). The relationship of the left lung to the heart also supports discussions of left sided volume loss, mediastinal shift, and why lingular disease can mimic right middle lobe pathology on imaging.
