Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is opened to emphasize the intrapulmonary airway tree in an adult male. Superiorly, the trachea descends in the midline with visible cartilaginous rings, then bifurcates at the carina into the right and left main bronchi; each continues as lobar bronchi and segmental bronchi distributed within the right superior, middle, and inferior lobes and the left superior and inferior lobes. The right lung sits slightly more superior and lateral, while the left lung appears smaller with a medial cardiac impression, and the domed diaphragm forms the inferior boundary of both pleural cavities. Segmental bronchi matter because they map directly to bronchopulmonary segments, the functional and surgical units of the lung separated by connective tissue septa and accompanied by segmental pulmonary arteries. This anterior perspective helps you track how aspirated material preferentially enters the right bronchial tree, often lodging in the right lower lobe segments when a patient is supine, and it supports planning for bronchoscopy, segmentectomy, or endobronchial blocker placement based on predictable branching patterns.
