Description
Rendered in left lateral profile, the prevertebral fascia forms a dense sheath deep to the sternocleidomastoid and posterior to the pharyngeal wall, hugging the anterior surfaces of the cervical vertebral bodies. Superiorly it approaches the basiocciput at the skull base, while inferiorly it continues into the root of the neck where it blends with the endothoracic fascia. Deep cervical muscles lie immediately deep to this membrane, including longus capitis and longus colli anteriorly and the scalene group more laterally, with the mandibular ramus and temporalis and masseter framing the more superficial masticatory region. Seeing the prevertebral layer from the side matters because it defines the posterior boundary of the retropharyngeal and “danger” spaces, the corridors along which deep neck infection can track from the pharynx toward the mediastinum. It also helps orient the surgeon or proceduralist working around the cervical spine and anterior neck, where violating this fascia can expose the prevertebral musculature and alter expected tissue planes during anterior cervical approaches. A clean fascial plane is the teaching point. Small errors here propagate. Use this asset for head and neck anatomy blocks, dental and maxillofacial teaching on deep fascial layers, and surgical education materials covering retropharyngeal abscess, cervical spondylodiscitis spread, or anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) plane dissection. It also reads well in radiology primers when correlating the prevertebral soft tissues on lateral neck radiographs and sagittal CT or MRI.
