Description
Seen in left lateral profile, the submental vein courses superficial to the mylohyoid region along the inferior border of the mandible, then turns posterolaterally toward the submandibular triangle beside the submandibular gland. It communicates with the facial venous system, which in this view sits anterior to the masseter and parallels the facial artery as both ascend toward the angle of the mouth and medial canthus. Deep to the vessels, the mandibular body and ramus form a clear bony backdrop, while the cervical vertebrae stack inferiorly to anchor the head and neck relationships. Arteries appear in red, veins in blue. For teaching venous drainage of the face, a lateral view clarifies how the submental vein links the midline submental region to the facial vein and, by extension, to the internal jugular vein via the common facial vein. That route matters in infections and inflammation of the lower lip, chin, and anterior floor of mouth, where venous channels can carry septic thrombophlebitis into deeper cervical pathways. Surgeons also care about this corridor during submandibular gland excision and level I neck dissection, where small venous tributaries near the mandibular margin and gland capsule can bleed briskly if not identified early.
