Presented in lateral profile, the transverse facial artery is traced as it branches from the superficial temporal artery within the parotid region and courses anteriorly across the masseter, running inferior to the zygomatic arch toward the cheek and lateral nose. Superficial facial muscles are arranged over its distal territory, while deeper landmarks include the parotid gland bed and the external ear complex posteriorly. Venous companions and smaller arterioles form a regional vascular network around the orbit, midface, and perioral tissues. Orientation is clear: the vessel runs from posterior to anterior, with its proximal origin superior and posterior to its more distal facial branches. For facial surgeons, this artery is a practical landmark because it traverses the same operative field used in parotidectomy, facelift (rhytidectomy) dissection, and zygomatic arch exposure, where uncontrolled bleeding can obscure the plane between the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and parotid fascia. Injury most often occurs as the dissection crosses the anterior border of the parotid gland and the masseteric fascia, where the transverse facial artery can be larger than expected and may anastomose with the facial and infraorbital arterial systems.
