Description
Arising from the posterior aspect of the ulna and adjacent interosseous membrane, the extensor digiti minimi (EDM) is shown as a narrow muscle belly lying medial to the extensor digitorum and just lateral to extensor carpi ulnaris along the ulnar side of the distal forearm. Its tendon passes deep to the extensor retinaculum in the fifth dorsal compartment, then courses dorsally toward the little finger, where it typically joins the extensor expansion over the metacarpophalangeal joint. Proximally, the extensor group shares a common extensor origin on the lateral epicondyle, but the medial perspective clarifies how EDM separates from extensor digitorum before the tendons diverge distally. Isolation of EDM matters when you are teaching the compartmental anatomy of the dorsal wrist and the fine points of independent small finger extension, because the tendon’s constrained passage beneath the retinaculum and its relationship to the ulnar head set the stage for focal tenosynovitis and attritional rupture in inflammatory arthropathy. This view also helps explain clinical exam findings: weak isolated extension at the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint can reflect EDM dysfunction even when the extensor digitorum tendons remain intact. A small muscle, clear consequences. Educators often need a clean medial rendering of EDM to contrast it with extensor digitorum and extensor carpi ulnaris in upper limb gross anatomy labs, hand surgery teaching files, and rehabilitation materials addressing extensor tendon gliding and adhesions after dorsal wrist procedures. It also fits well in atlas spreads on the extensor retinaculum compartments, and in operative texts discussing tendon transfers that repurpose EDM for reconstruction of thumb extension or intrinsic imbalance.
