Description
Running along the medial thigh, the femoral vein is shown as a large-caliber blue vessel deep to the sartorius and within the femoral triangle, continuing inferiorly from the popliteal vein through the adductor hiatus. Proximal relationships include the femoral artery lying lateral to the vein and the femoral nerve more lateral still, with the vein approaching the femoral canal as it ascends toward the inguinal ligament. Medially and posteriorly, the adductor longus and adductor magnus form the muscular backdrop as the vessel courses toward the pelvis. Clear landmarks. Clinically, a medial perspective is the one you want when teaching femoral venous access and the anatomy that governs safe cannulation: artery lateral, vein medial at the femoral crease, and the profunda femoris vein joining proximally as the neurovascular bundle transitions toward the external iliac vein. This view also supports discussion of deep vein thrombosis in the femoropopliteal segment and why thrombus at or above the common femoral vein carries higher embolic risk than isolated calf venous thrombosis. The juxtaposition of the vein with the adductor canal and adductor hiatus helps explain where compression, trauma, or iatrogenic injury can occur during catheter placement or surgical exposure. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and vascular anatomy teaching, in interventional radiology and emergency medicine training materials on femoral line placement, or in surgical texts covering femoral triangle and adductor canal approaches.
