Description
Running deep in the proximal thigh, the profunda femoris (deep femoral) vein is shown on the medial aspect of the left lower limb, coursing superiorly to join the femoral vein near the femoral triangle. Medial to the shaft of the femur, it receives perforating tributaries that pass posteriorly through adductor magnus and communicate with the muscular venous network of the posterior compartment. Superficial channels, including the great saphenous vein, track along the medial leg and thigh in lighter contrast, highlighting the separation between superficial drainage and the deep system. Clear layering. A medial perspective makes the deep femoral vein easier to teach because it sits behind the clinically familiar great saphenous vein and femoral vein, yet it contributes a large share of venous return from the thigh and can serve as an outflow pathway when the femoral vein is compromised. This relationship matters in duplex ultrasound mapping for suspected proximal deep vein thrombosis, where thrombus in the femoral vein or profunda femoris vein changes management and predicts risk of pulmonary embolism. It also supports procedural planning for femoral venous access, so you can anticipate adjacent superficial veins and avoid confusing a large superficial varix with the true deep system.
