Description
Plantar skin and superficial fascia are rendered semitransparent to reveal the first-layer intrinsic muscle flexor digiti minimi brevis along the lateral border of the sole. The muscle belly lies inferior to the fifth metatarsal, running anteromedially from the region of the base of the fifth metatarsal and the plantar aponeurosis toward the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. Medial to it, the thicker central band of the plantar aponeurosis trends toward the forefoot, separating the lateral plantar compartment from the more central flexor mass. Skin creases of the heel and midfoot provide surface landmarks overlying the muscular plane. Orientation from the plantar perspective matters because this is the surgical and examination surface for lateral-sole pain and fifth-toe deformity. Flexor digiti minimi brevis is often discussed alongside abductor digiti minimi, but distinguishing the flexor’s more anterior course toward the toe helps when teaching the first muscular layer of the sole and when correlating focal tenderness near the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint with overuse in dancers, runners, or patients with cavus feet. Use this view for gross anatomy lab manuals, podiatry and orthopaedic teaching on intrinsic foot compartments, or figure plates that need a realistic plantar skin context while still isolating a single intrinsic muscle. It also fits patient-facing education for lateral forefoot strain and postoperative diagrams after procedures addressing fifth-toe clawing or tailor’s bunion where intrinsic balancing is discussed.
