Description
Oriented in a lateral perspective of the adult male foot, the flexor digiti minimi brevis occupies the plantar lateral compartment, arising from the base of the fifth metatarsal and adjacent fibrous structures and running distally toward the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. The muscle belly sits inferior to the fifth metatarsal shaft and anterior to the calcaneal tuberosity, with its tendon coursing forward along the lateral border of the sole. Deep to the translucent soft tissue contour, the calcaneus lies posterior, the talus superior at the ankle, and the cuboid and lateral cuneiform region bridge the hindfoot to the metatarsals. Bone and muscle are presented together for orientation. Clinically, this lateral plantar view helps separate intrinsic fifth-ray mechanics from extrinsic toe flexors, a distinction that matters when localizing lateral forefoot pain and gait-related deformity.
