Description
Along the lateral plantar aspect of the male foot, the flexor digiti minimi brevis (flexor digiti minimi brevis pedis) lies superficial to the fifth metatarsal shaft and plantar to the cuboid, tracking distally toward the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe. Its muscle belly occupies the lateral compartment of the sole, medial to the lateral plantar skin and lateral to the central plantar musculature, with the tendon continuing anteriorly to flex the metatarsophalangeal joint of digit V. Adjacent osseous landmarks logically visible in this projection include the calcaneus posteriorly, talus superiorly at the ankle mortise, and the lateral column bones (cuboid and metatarsals) leading to the toe phalanges. Orientation is clear. For teaching and clinical correlation, the lateral plantar view is where the relationship between intrinsic musculature and the lateral column of the foot becomes unambiguous, including how the flexor digiti minimi brevis runs close to the course of the lateral plantar nerve and artery as they sweep anteriorly from the tarsal tunnel. Pain and weakness of fifth-toe flexion can accompany lateral plantar nerve entrapment (Baxter-type neuropathy variants) or postsurgical scarring after lateral midfoot or fifth metatarsal procedures, and this angle helps explain why incisions over the plantar-lateral midfoot risk denervating small intrinsic muscles. The fifth metatarsal base also anchors the lateral soft-tissue envelope. Podiatry and gross anatomy courses use this kind of plate to connect plantar compartments, metatarsal landmarks, and toe mechanics during stance and push-off, while surgical atlases can place it alongside approaches for fifth metatarsal fractures, tailor’s bunion correction, or plantar-lateral mass excision.
