Description
Centered along the posterior thorax, the paired eleventh ribs (costae XI) curve laterally and inferiorly from their vertebral attachments, sitting caudal to the tenth ribs and cranial to the twelfth ribs. Each rib head meets the body of T11 at the costovertebral joint, and the sharp angulation at the head and neck is emphasized where the rib turns away from the transverse processes. Medial to the rib angles, the thoracic vertebrae form a midline column; laterally, the intercostal spaces separate adjacent ribs and define the course of the intercostal neurovascular bundles along the inferior rib margins. Floating ribs. A posterior perspective makes the “atypical” anatomy of rib 11 easy to teach: a single articular facet on the head and minimal or absent tubercle, which changes how it relates to the transverse process compared with ribs 2 to 9. That distinction matters in posterior thoracic trauma and in procedures near the costovertebral junction, where fractures at the rib angle or dislocation at the costovertebral joint can accompany injuries to the T11 level and irritate the intercostal nerve. This view also supports surface anatomy planning for posterior approaches to the thoracolumbar junction, where rib counting errors can lead to wrong-level intervention.
