Posteriorly, the paired tenth ribs (costae X) arc laterally from the thoracic vertebral column, their heads aligning with the T10 vertebral body and the T10 to T11 intervertebral disc, then narrowing into a distinct neck and tubercle at the costotransverse region. Medial rib landmarks sit immediately lateral to the spinous processes, with the rib angles sweeping inferolaterally toward the flank before the shafts curve anteriorly out of view. Adjacent osseous references typically visible in this field include the T9 to T12 vertebrae, posterior portions of the ninth through twelfth ribs, and the superior lumbar spine at the thoracolumbar junction. Color accents commonly mark the costovertebral and costotransverse joints or their supporting ligaments for fast orientation.
