Posteriorly, the thoracic cage is organized around the thoracic vertebral column, with the true ribs (costae I to VII) curving laterally from the midline to form the bony framework of the upper thorax. Each rib meets its corresponding vertebra at the costovertebral joint between the rib head and the vertebral body, and at the costotransverse joint between the rib tubercle and the transverse process, creating a paired, segmental pattern on either side of the spinous processes. Inferior to the thoracic region, the lumbar vertebrae continue toward the sacrum and coccyx as a midline reference for alignment. Symmetry is the point. This posterior perspective matters because it puts the rib articulations, not the sternum, at center stage.
