Description
Laterally profiled true ribs (costae I to VII) sweep from their posterior articulations with the thoracic vertebrae toward the sternum, forming the superior portion of the bony thorax. The rib heads align with the bodies of T1 to T7 and the tubercles sit posterolateral to the transverse processes at the costotransverse joints, while the shafts arc anteriorly and inferiorly toward their costal cartilages. Thoracic vertebrae are shown in series with intervening intervertebral discs, continuing into the lumbar spine and sacrococcygeal segments, making the thoracic kyphosis and lumbosacral curvature easy to read. Select ribs are color-accented to separate the true rib set from adjacent skeletal elements. A lateral view of the true ribs clarifies the pump-handle mechanics of the upper thorax, where elevation at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints increases the anteroposterior diameter during inspiration. It also makes the posterior rib angles and vertebral levels legible, which is where clinicians localize rib fractures on plain radiographs and where thoracic epidural and paravertebral blocks are planned relative to the transverse processes and rib necks. Clear bony landmarks. The same relationships matter in thoracotomy planning, because intercostal spaces are counted along the rib margins and the rib head region lies close to the sympathetic trunk and pleura.
