Description
Running in paired columns along the posterior cervical spine, the intertransversarii cervicis occupy the narrow interval between adjacent transverse processes from the upper to lower neck, flanking the articular pillars and facet (zygapophysial) joints. Superiorly, the occipital bone and the atlas (C1) frame the craniovertebral junction, while the remaining cervical vertebrae (C2 to C7) stack inferiorly with their spinous processes aligned in the midline. Each muscle slip sits lateral to the laminae and just medial to the more superficial paraspinal mass, creating a tidy, segmental pattern against the vertebral column. Small muscles. Precise spacing. A posterior perspective like this is useful because the intertransversarii are often taught as “minor” muscles, yet they sit exactly where clinicians localize segmental dysfunction: beside the facet joints and across the transverse processes that guide coupled cervical motion.
