Description
Posteriorly, the cervical portion of the spinal cord (myelon) lies centrally within the vertebral canal, aligned with the stacked cervical vertebrae of the vertebral column. A distinct posterior median sulcus tracks in the midline, separating the right and left posterior funiculi, while paired dorsal rootlets converge toward the dorsal roots of the cervical spinal nerves. Each nerve courses laterally through its corresponding intervertebral foramen between adjacent vertebrae, then begins to branch toward the neck and shoulder girdle. Midline symmetry stands out. This posterior perspective matters when you need to teach or plan around the dorsal elements: dorsal roots carry sensory afferents, and their proximity to the laminae and spinous processes frames common posterior approaches to the cervical spine.
