Description

Centered on the lumbar segment of the vertebral column in an adult male, the series of vertebral bodies are separated by intervertebral discs and bordered by irregular bony excrescences consistent with osteophytes (bone spurs). Along the anterolateral margins of adjacent vertebrae, these spur formations project beyond the normal cortical contour, bridging toward the disc space and tracking the usual course of the anterior longitudinal ligament. Posteriorly, the vertebral arches and spinous processes align in a stepped profile, while transverse processes extend laterally as attachment sites for the deep paraspinal musculature. Lumbar osteophytes most often arise in the setting of degenerative disc disease and facet arthrosis, where altered segmental mechanics drive endplate remodeling and marginal bone formation. A lateral perspective is useful because it highlights anterior and lateral spur burden that can correlate with stiffness and pain, and it sets up a clear discussion of how the same degenerative process can narrow the intervertebral foramina and contribute to L4 or L5 radiculopathy. Red emphasis around select disc levels reads well as an educational cue for active inflammation or painful degenerative change, the clinical territory of discogenic low back pain, spondylosis, and, less commonly, discitis in the right context. This is not a subtle finding. Use this illustration in musculoskeletal anatomy and spine pathology teaching to contrast normal lumbar disc spaces with osteophyte formation and to introduce radiology concepts such as spondylotic spur morphology on lateral plain films and sagittal CT or MRI.
