Oriented from a posterior perspective, the laryngeal framework centers on the cricoid cartilage, with its broad lamina inferior to the paired arytenoid cartilages that sit like saddles on the superior border. Each arytenoid presents a vocal process projecting anteromedially toward the glottis and a muscular process projecting laterally, providing attachment for the intrinsic laryngeal muscles rendered in blue. Spanning between the arytenoids, the interarytenoid (transverse and oblique arytenoid) fibers bridge the posterior aspect of the rima glottidis, while the posterior cricoarytenoid muscles arise from the posterior cricoid lamina and run superolaterally to the arytenoid muscular processes. Small structures. Big consequences. Posterior laryngeal anatomy is where phonation and airway protection intersect mechanically, and this view makes the cricoarytenoid joints and their muscular drivers easy to teach.
