Description
Seen from a superior (dorsal) perspective, the osseous framework of the adult male foot is laid out from the tarsals to the phalanges, with the calcaneus posterior and the talus seated superior to it at the hindfoot. Anterior to the talus, the navicular aligns medially, the cuboid sits laterally, and the three cuneiforms bridge to the bases of metatarsals I to III. Five metatarsals project distally toward the toes, with metatarsal I broader and more medial, and the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges forming digits II to V while the hallux ends at a distal phalanx only. Joint margins are picked out along the tarsometatarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal articulations. A dorsal bony view like this is the workhorse for teaching forefoot alignment and for localizing pain generators by ray, especially around the Lisfranc complex at the base of the second metatarsal where the second ray is recessed between the cuneiforms. That anatomic mortise matters in trauma: subtle diastasis between the medial cuneiform and metatarsal II on weightbearing studies flags Lisfranc ligament disruption, and the exact metatarsal and cuneiform relationships guide operative reduction. Fracture patterns also read cleanly from above, including avulsion at the tuberosity of the fifth metatarsal and stress injury along metatarsals II to III. A clear map. Use this plate in gross anatomy and musculoskeletal radiology teaching to pair dorsal surface anatomy with AP and oblique foot radiographs, or in orthopaedic and podiatric texts discussing tarsometatarsal instability, metatarsalgia, and hallux deformities.
