Description
Oblique dorsosuperior viewing of the male foot skeleton brings the talus and calcaneus into the posterior field, with the navicular positioned anteromedial to the talar head and the cuboid sitting anterolateral in the tarsus, distal to the calcaneus. Distal to the tarsals, the five metatarsals project anteriorly, their bases forming the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) line and their heads articulating with the proximal phalanges at the metatarsophalangeal joints. Phalanges are arranged in the expected formula, two in the hallux and three in digits II to V, and articular cartilage is indicated along the intertarsal, tarsometatarsal, metatarsophalangeal, and interphalangeal joint margins. Clear bony landmarks. Spatial relationships in this angle make the medial and lateral longitudinal arches easier to read as continuous columns, from the calcaneal tuberosity through the talus and navicular to the first ray medially, and through the calcaneus and cuboid to the fourth and fifth metatarsals laterally. That matters in clinic: the cuboid and calcaneocuboid joint form the lateral column, a frequent site of pain in cuboid syndrome and a key segment in midfoot injuries where loss of column length can alter gait mechanics. The tarsometatarsal alignment also sets the stage for understanding Lisfranc fracture dislocations, where subtle incongruity between the metatarsal bases and cuneiforms is diagnostically decisive. Use this plate for gross anatomy and lower limb teaching when you need students to identify tarsals and rays without soft tissue distraction, and for orthopaedic or podiatry texts discussing midfoot trauma, arch biomechanics, or radiographic correlation in AP and oblique foot series.
