Description
Oriented in standard anatomical position, this superior (dorsal) view of a male foot skeleton runs from the distal phalanges of digits I to V proximally through the metatarsals to the tarsus. The proximal phalanx of the hallux sits medial to the lesser toe phalanges, and each digit aligns with its corresponding metatarsal head across the metatarsophalangeal joints. Proximal to the metatarsal bases, the medial, intermediate, and lateral cuneiforms articulate with metatarsals I to III, while the cuboid supports metatarsals IV and V laterally; the navicular lies proximal to the cuneiforms, leading back to the talus and the calcaneus posteriorly. Joint margins and articular surfaces are accented to draw attention to the metatarsophalangeal and interphalangeal lines, as well as the tarsometatarsal (Lisfranc) complex, a common site of subtle injury that can be missed when alignment is not scrutinized. Dorsal relationships are also easier to teach in this projection: the relative length and orientation of the metatarsal shafts, the medial column (talus to first metatarsal), and the lateral column (calcaneus to fifth metatarsal) that clinicians consider when discussing arch mechanics and deformity.
