Description
Medial projection of the male foot skeleton emphasizes the medial longitudinal arch from the calcaneal tuberosity posteriorly to the head of the first metatarsal anteriorly. The talus sits superior to the calcaneus, with the navicular positioned anteromedial to the talar head and the medial cuneiform distal to the navicular, aligning with the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx of the hallux. Distally, the metatarsals and phalanges form the forefoot lever, while white-marked articular surfaces outline the talocrural, subtalar, talonavicular, naviculocuneiform, and tarsometatarsal joints. Blue highlighting tracks the arch contour. Medial views matter because arch mechanics are dictated by talonavicular position and the plantar support complex, particularly the plantar calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament and tibialis posterior tendon that sling the talar head. Flatfoot deformity (adult acquired pes planovalgus) often begins with tibialis posterior dysfunction and progressive collapse at the talonavicular joint, while plantar fasciitis and navicular stress injuries relate to repetitive loading along this same medial column. A clean side-on relationship between calcaneus, talus, and navicular also clarifies where subtalar pronation and supination translate into forefoot abduction or adduction.
